Why I Write
by Manuel A. Luna-Murray

I write because I have to
I write because there is no other way;
Jumbled thoughts and memories
cascading my soul with melodies.

I write because I have to
I write as there is no other way
to distinguish between needs and desires
clamoring for my heart and my attention.

I write because I have to
I write for there is no other way
to discover what lies beneath,
unspoken and unintelligible
the life I live within.

I write because I have to
express my feelings and my thoughts
to make this world a better place
through words of faith and strength.

I write because I have to
I write since there is no other way
to understand who it is I am:
Male, Black, and Puerto Rican
speaking a language that is all my own.

I write to reach my readers
the workers and the dreamers
who emerge from different backgrounds;
building a future all of their own
assembling the pieces of the unknown.

I write for I’m a writer
What else would a writer do?
I write because there is no other way
to live this life anew

For when the storms of life approach
I’m feeling lost without a coach
as I wonder, who am I to reproach
for the mess that I have made?

Lonely without friends
I’m facing the bitter end,
cold and afraid.
I ask myself
Who will come to my aid?

And just like that
when I least expect it
You find a way
into my life

You are golden
the One to whom I am beholden.
Truth unchanging
that dissipates the storm that is raging.

My Savior
My Love
My Friend
My God

You find your way
into my soul
through words and phrases
passed down through the ages.

I write because I have to
I write cause there is no other way
to transform my life
from chaos undefined
into poetry redefined.

A symphony of harmony
whose every note is justified
where conviction takes the center stage,
allowing me to rise above the cage.

Upon the written page
lies all of the rage
pain, anguish, and shame
that I tried to explain
to others in vain.

I write to relieve the boredom
that is the acceptance of the status quo.
I write to create that tension
that will challenge people
to live a life of intention.
